  4.     The world of French haute couture was atwitter over the news.
  5. After nearly 30 years as artistic director of Christian Dior,
  6. celebrated couturier Marc Bohan, 62, had been unceremoniously
  7. ousted. Succeeding him at the house that has long epitomized French
  8. fashion: Milanese designer Gianfranco Ferre, 45. Dior's managing
  9. director, Beatrice Bongibault-Dhjan, implied that Bohan's departure
  10. was sort of his idea. Said she: "It was elegant of Bohan to know
  11. when to leave."

  13.     Mais non, said Bohan. In an interview with Figaro, he claimed
  14. that the changeover had come as a terrible blow. French couturiers
  15. were irked that Dior had not chosen a replacement from the ranks
  16. of Gallic designers. In fact, Dior is getting ready for the hot
  17. competition that will result from European unification in 1992. In
  18. the past decade Ferre has won numerous prizes for sophisticated
  19. ready-to-wear clothing that might sell better in the broader market
  20. than Bohan's classical creations.
